Research O Conduct some research on the following items: O Author O Time Period (when was the poem written and what was going on during that time) O Poem itself

Thesis O Looking at your theme statement from the close reading, turn this into a thesis statement that sums up what you believe the poem means and how the literary devices support that theme O Include the title of the poem and poet’s name within the statement

Introduction O You will compile a few sentences that sum up a little bit about your author and their background as you believe it relates to the poem O This is where you can include any historical connections O Must use in-text citations based on where you found the research! O Then you will Segway right into your thesis statement at the end….

Main Points (represent body paragraphs) 1. Theme…. O Explain the meaning and how the author conveys this meaning O MUST embed quotes (multiple examples) from the poem O Then, you should explain these and connect the lines from your poem back to your overall meaning. 2. 8 Parentheticals aka In-text Citations for Poetry O Quoting Three Lines or Fewer O Incorporate the quotation into the body of your paragraph. O Use slashes (/) to indicate line breaks within the poem O Keep all punctuation intact as it appears in the poem O Use quotation marks to denote the beginning and end of the quotation O You do not include the poet's name in your parenthetical citation since you are only doing one poem. O Example O Eliot immediately engages the reader with his use of the second person in the opening lines: "Let us go then, you and I / When the evening is spread out against the sky" ( 1-2).

Parentheticals aka In-text Citations for Poetry O Quoting Four or More Lines O Start the quotation on a new line. O Indent each line one inch from the left margin of your paragraph. O Preserve all punctuation, spacing, and line breaks exactly as they appear in the original text of the poem. O Double-space between each line. O Do not use quotation marks (unless they are used in the poem). O Example O Though he acknowledges MacBride's heroism, he does so begrudgingly: A drunken, vainglorious lout He had done most bitter wrong To some who are near my heart Yet I number him in the song; (31-34)
