2 First a Warm-Up Game Doesn’t Fit This game is very simple. All you need is a list of 3 or 4 words which are similar and one that does not fit with the group. Ex: Apple, Orange, Carrot, Bannana. The word that doesn’t fit is- Carrot because it is a vegetable.

3 Education in the United States: Children in the United States are required to go to school for 12 years. From age 6-18. At age 6 students attend Kindergarten From age 7-11 students attend Elementary School. From age 12-14 Students attend Junior High/Middle School. From age 14-18 Students go to High School.

4 There are two types of schools in the United States. Public school: Most students go to public school, they are free. Private school: These schools cost money to attend.

5 The grading system: Students do not receive grades every day, only for tests and reports.

6 Kindergarten In Kindergarten students learn basic things like simple math, reading, and life skills.

7 Elementary School: ages 7-11 In Elementary school, students continue to learn math, and English but begin studying other things like science, history, and geography.

8 Recess is 10-20 minutes of free time or play time for students in kindergarten and elementary school. There may be one or two periods of recess everyday.

9 Junior High/Middle School- ages 11-14 In Middle School, the education becomes more focused, and new subjects are introduced like foreign language (usually French and Spanish) and also sexual education.

10 Classes like “Wood Shop” can be chosen as elective classes by students.

11 In middle school, students must also take P.E. (Physical Education ) where different sports activities are played.

12 More emphasis is also placed on computer class.

13 Students go to high school for 3-4 years and graduate when they are 18. In high school students must take math, science, English, P.E., foreign language, and elective classes.

14 What are elective classes? Elective classes are classes that students choose. They are separate from the classes that they must take.

16 High school sports like football, baseball, and basketball are very popular.

17 For after school sports, there is usually a fee, that students must pay. The fee is for uniforms and equipment.

19 Usually at the age of 18, students in the 12 th class graduate.

20 Before graduation, there is a special dance called the “Prom” that students in the 11 th and 12 th class go to. Boys and girls ask each other to go to the dance, and it is a special time for everyone.

23 During the 10 th Class Students must take the national exam: SAT This test partly determines where students will go to university. The Maximum score for this test is 1600 points. This test covers two subjects, math and English.

25 After high school, students have many options. Option 1: They may find a job.

26 Option 2: They may join the military

27 Option 3:They may continue their education

31 How do students pay for university? College is expensive, but there are several ways you can pay. 1.Financial help from parents/grandparents. 2.Students may take out loans. 3.Students may receive a scholarship. 4.Students may work.

32 Many students will work part-time to pay for university.

33 Question What is a scholarship, and how does a student receive one?

34 Scholarships are grants. Students must apply for this money, and there are many reasons why a student may be able to receive a scholarship. They may receive money for excellent grades and SAT scores. They may receive money if their family is poor. They may receive money for being an excellent athlete.

35 Graduate school/doctorate degree 4 year university 2 year Community College

36 Community College: Local two-year colleges, that offer basic courses. Students may continue on to university after community college.

37 College/University: 4 year institutions. Students pick a major for example “History”, but during the first two years of university they must take other required courses like math, science, and philosophy.

38 US students do not really have a “profession” for which they are studying. For specialization, most students go to graduate school, which is to more years.

39 One point of clarification: In the United States-,college and university are the same thing.
