3 Life Cycle of the Butterfly Stage one is the Egg Stage two is the Caterpillar or larva Stage three is the Chrysalis or pupa Stage four is the Butterfly

4 Stage 1 Egg –The mother lays the egg on a leaf to eat –It is as big as a pin head

5 Stage 2 Caterpillar or larva –The eggs hatch into hungry caterpillars –They grow for about 12 to 14 days, molting four or more times

6 Stage 3 Chrysalis or pupa –The caterpillar grows a chrysalis for about one week –It attaches to a twig with a button of silk

7 Stage 4 Butterfly –It hangs from its chrysalis and pumps blood into its wings –It takes two hours before it dries off and it can fly

8 Butterfly Art Project

9 Toilet-paper tube Tongue depressor or ice-cream pop stick Heavy construction paper 6" (150 mm) piece of pipe cleaner, folded in half Markers or crayon Scissors and glue

10 Butterfly Art Project Cut out and color a butterfly from the heavy paper. Put a small hole at the top of the butterfly's head. Color the toilet paper tube to look like a chrysalis.

11 Butterfly Art Project Shape the pipe cleaner like the letter "V". Insert it through the little hole in the butterfly's head and then twist it to look like an antennae Glue the butterfly to one end of the tongue depressor or ice-cream pop stick and let the glue dry

12 Butterfly Art Project Curl the butterfly's wings and slide it into the chrysalis Pull the stick to make the beautiful butterfly come out of the chrysalis
