1 Bellwork Jan 17, 2013 1 1)Turn to page 433 in your book. Then Look at the diagram above. What are the two components shown in the diagram (p433: last para) 2) What effect is this diagram showing? (p433: last paragraph) 3) What one component does this diagram need to make an electromagnet? (p434: top paragraph) SPI 0807:12.1 to 12.3 Electricity and Magnetism

2 Today’s Plan 1) Discuss objective(s), bell work, lost & found, and birthdays. 2) Collect signed report cards (homeroom only) 3) Discuss most missed answers from quiz 4) Continue viewing notes etc. about electromagnetism 5) Do Quiz Remediation or hands-on activity with magnets 6) (Time permitting) Watch Brainpop about electromagnetism 7) Copy this into your agenda! No homework Silly Thought Why are they called apartments if they are all stuck together? 4 SPI 0807.9.12 Acids and Bases SPI 0807:12.1 to 12.3 Electricity and Magnetism

3 (See Ch. 16: Sect 1 VC and p430: Fig 10) Notes SPI 0807:12.1 to 12.3 Electricity and Magnetism

4 Electromagnetism In 1820 it was discovered that electric current produces a magnetic field. Electromagnetism: Is the interaction between electricity and magnetism. (See VC) A solenoid: is a coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when carrying an electric current. (VC or p433: Fig 2) An electromagnet: is made up of a solenoid wrapped around an iron core. (see p434: Fig3) Turning Electromagnets On and Off: Electromagnets are very useful because they can be turned on and off as needed. The solenoid has a field only when there is electric current in it.
