2 The European Disability Forum An independent umbrella NGO with national networks in 27 EU countries, Norway, Iceland & 40 European organisations from all main disabilities and chronic illnesses Led by persons with disabilities & families EDF receives support from EU, members and other donors

3 Our mission Fighting for equal opportunities & human rights across the EU agenda and beyond through a unified voice Making sure nothing about disabled people is decided without disabled people

4 Our priorities Ratification and Implementation UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities at EC and national level Access to education and employment Quality of social services and independent living Access to goods and services Access to transport, Infrastructure, ICT Access to vote – Disability Votes Count Achieving a Disability Pact with objectives and targets Mainstreaming non discrimination clause in Lisbon Treaty

5 MOU between ANEC & EDF Signed on 18 June 2008 Formalises the long standing cooperation between ANEC and EDF Matching complementary expertise: –ANEC with standardisation processes and procedures, issues covering all consumers –EDF with knowledge and experience on needs of persons with disabilities Achieving a high level of safety and accessibility for consumers of all ages and disability

6 Achievements of joint work Introduction of measures concerning use of standards as a complement to legislation in the revision of EU Electronic Communications Regulatory Package Cooperation in working groups for the drafting of standards within mandate 376 (ICT) Exploring possibility of standard development in implementation of regulation on the rights of persons with disabilities travelling by air Capacity building of Dpos Common statements on future of e- accessibility/web accessibility

7 Evaluation Disabled people see increasingly themselves as consumers and rights holders Cooperation has been positive and leading also with work with elderly people’s organisations Looking forward to enhance and continue cooperation Key issues for removing barriers for consumers with disabilities lie ahead

8 Challenges Ahead Achieving legislation on e- accessibility and web accessibility by designing a common strategy Engaging in expert group on e- accessibility Capacity building of consumers with disabilities for participation in standardisation

9 EDF expectations Implementation of EU regulations on passengers rights: air transport, bus, maritime & inland waterways Engaging in new mandate to standardisation bodies 420 on built environment and possible future mandate on Design for All Addressing the needs of persons with disabilities in emergency situations Promotion of Guide CEN Cenelec Guide 6 – Guidelines for standards and developers to address the needs of older persons and persons with disabilities
