2  Butterflies lay their eggs on the plants that will provide food for their young when they hatch.

3  The larvae or caterpillar hatches from the egg. It begins to eat almost immediately.

4  Caterpillars shed their skins to form a chrysalis or cocoon.

5  When the chrysalis hatches, a butterfly emerges, however, it takes some time for its wings to dry.

6  Finally, the butterfly is ready to soar.
