1 Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle
By: Scott Chaput Science 10

2 Basic information: The brown spruce longhorn beetle was originally living throughout Europe and parts of Asia Brown and black in color 2.5 cm in length at maturity Long wings Two large antennae Hard to distinguish from other flying beetles They usually live between 4-5 months Its main food is tree bark

3 Natural habitat, how it arrived:
Its natural habitat is to live within trees with fair weather conditions around them The beetle arrived in Canada from shipments of food and also from shipments of things made of wood (as that is their natural habitat)

4 Current location and Ecosystems
In Canada, it lives throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. It originally used to live only in Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, Nova Scotia. These are the only locations within North America that play host to the beetle. Before the beetles came to Nova Scotia, the trees in Point Pleasant park were thriving, but now the beetles have been eating out and rotting the inside of the trees making them die young and making the park look even worse after the devastation of hurricane Juan.

5 Problem and Solution: The biggest problem that the beetles bring is the devastation to our forests. With them killing off our trees, and with the many deforestation from logging companies, the province will have very little wood resources left. There is no current solution. In order to get rid of them, it would take the elimination of many trees. And even then, they would still be here, so there is no way to get rid of the beetles for good.
