4 - It was the first intergovernmental organization of the kind with the principal goal of peaceful resolutions of international conflicts and preventing war between its members - ideas on which the United Nations will emerge afterward

6 In spite of the shortcomings of the League, the idea of a necessity of forming the United Nations prevailed among the Great Powers during the World War II United Nations founded with 51 member states, counting 193 today

7  To keep peace throughout the world.  To develop friendly relations among states.  To help states work together to improve the lives of the poor, to conquer hunger, to eliminate disease and illiteracy, and to encourage the respect of fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals.  To be a center for harmonizing the actions of states that strive to achieve these goals.

10  First Committee (Disarmament and International Security Committee – GA1 DISEC) is concerned with disarmament and related international security questions;  Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee – GA2 ECOFIN) is concerned with economic questions;  Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee – GA3 SOCHUM) deals with social and humanitarian issues;  Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization Committee – GA4 SPECPOL) deals with a variety of political subjects not dealt with the First Committee, as well as with decolonization;  Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary Committee) deals with the administration and budget of the Untied Nations; and  Sixth Committee (Legal Committee) deals with international legal matters.

In Model UN, students step into the shoes of delegates from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization’s agenda - while playing their roles as delegates, students make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure – all in the interest of mobilizing international cooperation to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world

17 Before playing out their delegate roles in a Model UN simulation, students research the issues that their committee will address and focus on the position of the country they represent. Model UN participants learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics including peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development, globalization, etc.

18  Committees and topics  Each delegate or delegation is assigned a country within one of the committees  They represent the country’s position on the topic(s)  Rules of Procedure govern the process  Overseen by Dais (Chairs, Directors, Rapporteurs)
