4 How are children taught to read? PHONICS “Phonics refers to a method for teaching speakers of English to read and write their language. It involves connecting the sounds of spoken English with letters or groups of letters.” Literacy Trust

5 Phonics at Severnbanks Taught daily and systematically Use Letters and Sounds programme Taught from Term 1 in Reception Phases 1-6 that all children progress through Phonics teaches sounds as well as spelling patterns and tricky words Foundation for reading and writing Part of the rest of the curriculum

6 Phase 1 ‘Tuning in’ to sounds Listening for sounds Sounds in the environment around us Sounds in our names and important words Joining in rhymes and songs

7 Phase 2 Children learn initial sounds all taught with an action and a story behind them Children are introduced to 6 tricky words

8 Phase 3 Children begin to learn: digraphs – 2 letters that make 1 sound trigraphs – 3 letters that make 1 sound More tricky words are taught

9 Phase 4 Children consolidate all the sounds learnt in phases 2 and 3 – SPEED BLENDING Blends are taught – fl, gr, st, str, tch More tricky words are taught

10 Phase 5 Children learn new ways of making the same sounds – sounds families More tricky words are taught

11 Phase 6 Spelling patterns and rules Suffix and prefix – starts and ends of words fearful unhappy Links in with our SPaG sessions – understanding of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Context for writing - application

18 What can you do to help? Read little and often – do not need to read the whole book! Make reading fun – take turns Don’t make it a battle Encourage children to talk about their books Encourage children to write and make marks copying letters from books PHONETICALLY PLAUSIBLE – using phonics to write
