Environmental Sustainability in Brazil Owen Carr, Shelby Gaines, Nathan Liu, & Helina Solomon

Objectives Integrate principles of sustainable development into environmental policies End destruction of biodiversity Improve access to clean water by 50% Enhance lives of 100 million slum residents

Why is this Important? Many of the goals affect the planet’s overall health and ecosystems Affects millions living in poor conditions Aids the improvement of maternal health, reduction of child mortality, and the eradication of hunger

Background of Environmental Issues in Brazil Home to large portion of the Amazon rain forest Economic exploitation of its ecosystems has ravaged the richest and most productive environmental regions of the country The destruction of the Amazon rain forest is seen as most pressing issue ●Brazil is the largest coffee producer in the world

Repercussions Increase in possibility of droughts (leads to famine) Toxic waste infiltrating into oceans and water supply Degradation of industry and business (economic downfall) Indigenous tribes are being forced to leave as their homes in the forest are destroyed

What changes has Brazil made? Slowed the loss of deforestation and created protected regions Cattle ranching and soybean production curbed Freshwater preservation

What Still Needs to Be Addressed? Slums and refugees fleeing environmental crises Continued degradation of the Amazon rain forest by cattle ranches and farms Water pollution Global warming & carbon dioxide emissions
