4. Coordinate System (also called the coordinate plane) Formed by the intersection of two number lines, the horizontal axis and the vertical axis. Parts of a coordinate plane 1. x-axis 2. y-axis 3. Locating Points RULE: Any point P is represented by an ordered pair of numbers written in the form (x, y) The x-value, called the x-coordinate, represents the horizontal placement of the point  The x-coordinate is also called abscissa The y-value, called the y-coordinate, represents the vertical placement of the point  The y-coordinate is also called ordinate The x-value is always first and the y-value is always second
