7 How We Help: CREATE A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION Empower and enable villages to provide support services Empower and enable families to increase household income

8 Critical Components: Most Vulnerable Children Committee (MVCC): Orphaned and vulnerable children need psychological, social and legal support. We form volunteer villagers into committees and give them extensive training on identifying vulnerable children, defining their needs and providing support on an individual basis. Income Generating Cooperative (CO-OP): Adults who care for vulnerable children often lack the income to provide for their increased family. We organize these families into income generating cooperatives, providing seed capital, technical training and at least two years of follow up support. AFRICA BRIDGE: Our mission is to listen to Tanzanian children and empower their communities to protect, support and care for orphaned and vulnerable children through integrated sustainable development

12 CASE STUDY: Ngumbulu Village Very remote and mountainous region Economy based in forestry and some agriculture 2008 (YR1): Pig co-op started with 20 sows 2010 (YR3): Pig co-op grown to 50+ sows, providing for 100% of families fostering orphans Solved piglet marketing challenges through interconnection with MVCC

13 CASE STUDY: Idweli Village In 2005, potato and pig co-ops were started for families caring for most vulnerable children Co-ops expanded and now over 75 guardians are caring for vulnerable children The village self-initiated a small business co-op in 2006 and a maize milling co-op in 2010

14 CASE STUDY: Meet Alici Alici lives in Idweli Village and cares for six most vulnerable children In 2005, Alici joined the potato co-op in and became a successful potato farmer. By 2010, Alici started five more businesses: - breakfast stand - tailoring - cell phone cards sales - small pharmacy - charcoal sales

15 CASE STUDY: Meet Granny Witness Granny Witness and her grown daughter care for nine most vulnerable children In 2005, Granny Witness joined a pig co-op By 2010, Granny Witness ⁻built a new concrete house with a tin roof ⁻built a small pub and two retail shops ⁻helped get all of her children into school, including one into private boarding school
