Do it now activity Activity: A travel agent is trying to create a database to collect information about people who are booking a flight. He is having a few problems and needs your help! Look at the information below, then match each Data box to the correct Field box. For example, the Data ‘Morecambe’ matches the Field ‘Town’. DATA FIELD Dr. 44 Paul Morecambe £149.99 LA1 4FH Town House Number Postcode First Name Cost Title 11/12/2005 Date booked

Activity: How did you do? Your next task is to enter the Data Type for each Data/Field pair by clicking on the box and typing a word from one of the following options: TEXT NUMBER CURRENCY DATE/TIME LOOKUP* For example, the Data/Field pair Morecambe/Town has the Data Type ‘Text’. * The data type Lookup is when you can only enter a choice of data. DATAFIELD Dr. 44 Paul Morecambe £149.99 LA1 4FH Town House Number Postcode First Name Cost Title 11/12/2005 Date booked DATA TYPE Text When you are ready, go to the next slide.

Take a look at the answers below. Did you enter the correct Data Types? Text DATAFIELD Dr. 44 Paul Morecambe £149.99 LA1 4FH Town House Number Postcode First Name Cost Title 11/12/2005 Date booked DATA TYPE Number Text Currency Lookup Date/Time

I can create a database which is fit for purpose Filters Data Queries Database Reports Interrogate Creating a database Detective Turner and his team of detectives have been busy interviewing people. The team has now interviewed everyone using your questionnaire. This information is taking a long time to sort through, and they are having difficulties finding the information they need. By the end of this tutorial you will be able to: Create a database Input information into your database and check it for errors

Database theory

A database is a computerised system for storing large amounts of information in electronic format. It allows the user to find specific records, and sort and filter the data stored within it to provide useful reports. What is a database used for?

A database is built from tables of data, each table contains records, and each record contains fields. A record is a complete set of information about a person or thing. For example: one person’s name, date of birth, address. A field is one piece of information such as Surname. How does a database store information?

SurnameForenameDate of birth BaileyMark08/02/68 GarveyFrancis06/05/48 Field Name Can someone identify a Field Name? Can someone identify a Record? Record

Field Names Data Types Text Number AutoNumber Date/time Yes/no Currency Surname Forename House number Street Town Postcode Telephone number Date of birth

Fields usually have a maximum of three words in their name. For example, the question ‘What is your surname?’ would have the Field Name ‘Surname’. Now decide what the following Field Names could be. ‘What number is your house?’ could have a Field Name of: ‘What is your date of birth?’ could have a Field Name of: House number Date of birth Naming fields

I can create a database which is fit for purpose Filters Data Queries Database Reports Interrogate get started Download the document from Weebly. Make short, one or two word versions of the questions. These we will use for field names. First to finish gets principal reward! Go through the embedded document from Weebly to learn about database theory.

I can create a database which is fit for purpose Filters Data Queries Database Reports Interrogate Design field names and question types Download the document from Weebly called data types. design a database Now you need to go to: Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Access 2010 to begin designing your database. Watch the short video below to see how to do it.

I can create a database which is fit for purpose Filters Data Queries Database Reports Interrogate Add your information from your questionnaire! You can now enter the information from the three questionnaires that your classmates completed in Tutorial 2. Watch Skills Demo 3e on entering information onto your database first. Now it's your turn to enter your data. Remember to save the table again when you have entered all the information

I can create a database which is fit for purpose Filters Data Queries Database Reports Interrogate Round it up!! Now play an interactive game to test student knowledge of data types!
