3 You are in Year 11...... And I expect a lot. Embed quotations. Structure a detailed analytical paragraph. Read subtext/layers of meaning. Identify persuasive/rhetorical features and have some understanding of how/why/when they are used. Comprehend different audience/purposes for writing. Vary vocabulary. Understand how the context of a text affects the interpretation. Confidently use: – Simple, compound and complex sentences. – An apostrophe for possession and omission. – Understand how to use a comma to divide subclauses and have begun experimenting with parenthetical commas/varied sentence structure. – Beginning to use colons and semi-colons.

4 So what’s the difference? GCSE English is often referred to as English Language. It tests your ability to use English skills such as: – Reading subtext/Analysis – Creative Writing – Writing for Purpose and Audience – Spelling – Punctuation – Grammar

5 English Literature focuses on the study of four main texts alongside a selection of poetry. In GCSE, you have/will study: – A Shakespeare Play. – John Steinbeck Of Mice and Men – Willy Russell Blood Brothers – Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol – Alongside a selection of poetry.

6 GCSE English- Examinations and Controlled Assessments Made up of Four Units.  Unit 1 & 2: external assessments that are worth 30% of your overall grade each. Unit 1 is fiction. Unit 2 is non-fiction. Both contain a reading and a writing task. They are 1h45mins and you will sit them in Jan 2016.  Unit 3: controlled assessments. There are two tasks: a reading assessment and a writing assessment. Together they make up 20% of your grade.  Unit 4: speaking and listening. You have to complete two tasks: a individual presentation and a group discussion. Together they make up 20% of your grade.

7 GCSE English Literature- Examinations and Controlled Assessments Three Units.  Unit 1: External Assessment- Prose (Of Mice and Men) and Poetry. It is worth 35% of your overall grade and is 2 hours long. You will sit this June 2015.  Unit 2: External Assessment- Contemporary drama (Blood Brothers) and literary heritage prose (A Christmas Carol). It is worth 40% of your overall grade and is 2 hours long. You will sit this in June 2016.  Unit 3: Controlled Assessment- Poetry and Drama. This is worth 25% of your grade. You’ll have 4 hours to complete it and it should be roughly 2000 words long. (MACBETH!)

9 Synopsis Write a synopsis of A Christmas Carol. Must be 150 words.
