2. There are different types of verbs. Some show action, and some don’t.

3. Action Verbs shows action; tells what action someone or something is performing

4. Action Verbs Bill hit the ball. The cat purred softly. I walk to school. Susan spoke to me.

5. Transitive or Intransitive Transitive – directs action toward someone or something named in the same sentence; needs an object Ex: Jane carried her book to English class.

6. Transitive or Intransitive Intransitive – does not direct action toward someone or something; does not have an object Ex: Michael ran down the basketball court.

7. How to tell if it’s Transitive or Intransitive? Most action verbs can be either transitive or intransitive depending on the sentence. Ask Whom? or What? after the verb. If you can find the answer in the sentence, the verb is transitive. If not, the verb is intransitive.

9. Linking Verbs links, or connects, a word at or near the beginning of a sentence with a word at or near the end; commonly forms of be

10. Common Linking Verbs am is are was were be been seems feels tastes

11. Linking Verbs We are hungry. He was late to school. The rose smells good.

12. Helping/Main Verbs helping verb – can be added to another verb to make a single verb phrase; also commonly forms of be Helping verbs help and comes before a main verb.

13. Helping/Main Verbs I am eating my lunch. Ed has taken the test. We were talking.
