1 in the Learning Environment
Personal Computers in the Learning Environment Chapter 3 Jennifer House & Jenny Dority

2 Four major components of the computing cycle
Taking in data Processing the data Storing it as necessary Outputting the results to you

3 Hardware and Software Software is the term for programs that tell a computer how to accomplish a given task Hardware includes all of the computer components that are physical Touchable pieces, equipment

4 What is the difference between Memory and Storage?
Memory – A series of RAM chips that provide temporary, volatile electronic storage that is used by the CPU to store short-term data. Storage - A nonvolatile, electronic space on a magnetic or optical disc that the computer can use to store information and data for use at a later time.

5 The Role of the Operating System
Gives special instructions on how to act like a computer A collection of programs that tell it how to function and how to manage its own operation Creates an interface between you and the machine

6 3 Classes of Application Software
Utility Programs Administrative Applications Academic Applications Improve or monitor computer operations Word processing and grade book programs Tutorials and electronic encyclopedias

7 CPU Central Processing Unit
Controls all operations of the computer Processes data Coordinates all components Higher the megahertz – more responsive the machine

8 Input / Output devices Input = any peripheral used to enter data
Ex. Keyboard and mouse Output = pieces of hardware that move information out Ex. Monitor and printer

9 Monitor Resolution BUY HIGH Resolution = clarity of image on screen
Measured in pixels Measured vertically and horizontally Higher vertical number = crisper picture BUY HIGH

10 HIGH DPI = CRISP TEXT AND GRAPHICS
Printer Resolution Higher resolution = clearer text and graphics Measured in dpi (dots per inch) HIGH DPI = CRISP TEXT AND GRAPHICS

11 Do you have a VIRUS ??? Program written to disrupt or destroy
Transmitted by attaching to normal files Antivirus program should be installed on classroom computers Program updated monthly

12 Storage Devices Hard disk Floppy disk Removable disk CD-ROM CD-R CD-RW
