3 Department of Immigration and Border Protection The National Transition Strategy (NTS) –Released in 2010 –Mandated that all government websites/web applications conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) Level AA by December 2014 –Consisted of 3 phases The NTS 3

4 Department of Immigration and Border Protection Phase 1: Preparation –Agencies determined their readiness to undergo WCAG 2.0 transition and implementation. Phase 2: Transition –Agencies acquired skills to underpin implementation of WCAG 2.0. Phase 3: Implementation –Agencies developed an implementation plan to make web accessibility BAU. 3 phases of the NTS 4

5 Department of Immigration and Border Protection Web accessibility as BAU 5 Guidelines & checklists Word checklist available. Guidelines to be formally released. Role-based training Scheduled Word/PDF training sessions. Web Accessibility Toolbar training available and on demand. Standards integration UI Design Guidelines with accessibility considerations. Policy instructions WCAG 2.0 conformance approach; Use of alternate formats; Accessible procurement (web related goods and services); Accessibility request and complaints handling process. 6 Department of Immigration and Border Protection Word/PDF training available now as a face-to- face training Target audience is primarily content authors People send their expression of interest Numbers trained so far is approx. 70 Integration of Customs and Immigration = larger demand –Local and regional offices –Limited capacity /resources to deliver the training. Role-based training 6

7 Department of Immigration and Border Protection Developed an eLearning module in collaboration with DIBP’s eLearning team “Creating Accessible Word and PDF Documents” Integrated into the department’s learning management system – OurPeople –Automatic reporting –Available to all staff members –Enhances our face-to-face training in the subject matter –Allows us to develop more role based training. Work with Learning and Development to make the module mandatory for specific job roles eLearning module 7

8 Department of Immigration and Border Protection Key considerations for the module are –engaging and attractive –leverages known instructional design used by DIBP –content mirrors face to face training –WCAG 2.0 compliant –students can work at their own pace –can be used as a reference. eLearning module: Key requirements 8
