3 Classifying Elements What do we already know? BrainPOP Teaser BrainPOP Teaser 1)What is an element? a) It is the simplest form of matter and makes up all other substances. 2) What are atoms? a) The smallest particle of matter that has the properties of elements. Page 1

4 Classifying Elements: Vocabulary Part I 1) Protons: are located in the nucleus of an atom. 2) Neutrons: are located in the nucleus of an atom. 3) Electrons: are located outside of the nucleus and orbit around the nucleus. 4) Atomic Number: is the number of protons in an atom. Every element has a different atomic number. 5) Atomic Weight: Is the measure of its mass that is calculated by adding the number of protons and neutrons together. 6) Molecule: is a particle that contains more than one atom joined together. They are helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon and radon. 10) Metalloids: are a very small group of elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals.. 11) Periodic Table: arranges all known elements into rows and columns of increasing atomic number.
