GREAT EXPECTATIONS What do you expect from others? Luke 6 & 7 May 23 - PM

Disappointed? Has anyone disappointed you? People disappoint us when they do not do what we expect, desire If you expect perfection – you are setting yourself up for disappointment This sermon is a study of Luke 6 & 7

ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE: GIVE THEM UP! Luke 6:32-36 - 32 “But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE: GIVE THEM UP! We must learn to do good and expect nothing in return We often expect a return –We give – so we can get –We feed – so we can be fed –We entertain – so we can be entertained

ABOUT JESUS: LIFT THEM UP! Luke 7:6-7 - 6 Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 7 Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.

ABOUT JESUS: LIFT THEM UP! Roman soldier – was not worthy He put all his expectations in Jesus You will never go wrong looking unto Jesus Hebrews 12:2 - looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

ABOUT JESUS: LIFT THEM UP! “S” words – Salvation, Shepherd, Sustainer, Strength, Song We can do this with every letter – –A – Alpha, Author, Advocate, Almighty –B – Beloved, Bread, Branch, Brightness –C – Captain, Cornerstone, Counselor You can never expect too much from the one who is our “all in all”

ABOUT THE PREACHER: LIGHTEN UP! Luke 7:24-26 - 24 When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

ABOUT THE PREACHER: LIGHTEN UP! John disappointed many What were you looking for? –Weakling – mealy-mouthed –Softie – wearing fine clothes Throw away your expectations –Romans 3:4 - Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. –Don’t trust this preacher – or any other Same goes for elders, deacons, and other humans – we will fail

ABOUT YOURSELF: TOUGHEN UP! Luke 7:44-47 - 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

ABOUT YOURSELF: TOUGHEN UP! This woman – enters the house uninvited She begins to wash Jesus feet – with tears She expected much from herself –And she was disappointed –She demanded action – repentance Challenge yourself – stretch Be tough on yourself – demand better

What do you expect? The events in Luke 6 & 7 teach us: –If we expect much from others – we are setting ourselves up for disappointment –If we expect little from ourselves – we are going to be disappointed –If we expect great things from God – we will like the results Where are your expectations?
