1 Relay For Life Celebrate- Remember-Fight Back…

2 How It Began… The American Cancer Society Relay for Life, began in the mid 1980’s in Tacoma, Washington. A doctor by the name of Gordy Klatt, wanted to raise money for his local cancer research center. After giving it some thought he decided that the best way to raise the money would be a relay. He ran around the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for 24 hours, totaling 83 miles. During the night his family and friends donated $25 dollars to run with Klatt for 30 minute intervals, he then in total raised $27,000.

3 Celebrate-The lives of those who have battled cancer. More than 11 Million cancer survivors are living in the United States. The American Cancer Society has raised more than $3.2 billion Dollars, and invested it into cancer research.

4 Proof that together, we’re making a difference … 2006 Relay for Life at Bartram Trail High School, in Jacksonville, FL Cancer Survivors kick off the Relay for Life in July 2006 at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

5 Remember- Loved ones lost to the disease. This year about 564,800 Americans are expected to die of cancer More than 1,500 people a day. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. One of every four deaths in the US is from cancer. About 1,228,600 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year alone.

6 We Must Never Forget…

7 Fight Back- Against a disease that takes too much. The American Cancer Society offers people opportunities to fight back against cancer. Just by raising money to donate, you are fighting back.

8 Advocate The Federal Government is the nation's largest funder of cancer research. Insurance companies began covering many cancer screenings - like mammogram, colonoscopies and PSA tests. The American Cancer Society passed laws passed requiring Insurance Companies to cover these tests.

9 Save Lives. Fulfill Yours. The vision of The American Cancer Society is to motivate communities to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering. What’s it really like to volunteer with the American Cancer Society? There are over three million different answers to that question.

10 Whether it’s giving a cancer patient a ride to chemotherapy, putting together a team for Relay For Life, or sending an email to family and friends about cancer screenings. There are multiple ways you can get involved in the Society’s Lifesaving Mission.
