What is an EMS Wave? 0 All waves transfer energy and they also require a medium to travel in, Except EMS waves. 0 EMS waves are transverse waves that transfer electrical and magnetic energy. It consists of vibrating electric and magnetic fields that move through space at the speed of light.

Producing EMS waves 0 EMS waves are produced by charged particles which have electric fields that push or pull. 0 (relate this to the different sides of a magnet)

Energy 0 EM radiation is the energy that is transferred through space. Since they do not require a medium they can transfer energy through a vacuum (empty space)

Speed 0 All EM waves travel at the same speed in a vacuum, 300,000 km/s 0 This is the speed of light 0 When light waves travel through a medium such as air they slow down.

Models of EM Waves 0 There are two models 0 Wave model- Light wave vibrate in all directions, but no two wave vibrate in the same direction. Polarized lens are made to only allow one type of wave through. This wave is called polarized light. 0 Particle model- Some light behaves like a stream or beam. When it shines on some substances it causes electrons to move creating an electric current. Photoelectric effect is caused when electrons move so much that it is knocked out of a substance. Light energy is called a photon. Which was explained by A. Einstein.
