2 Basic Concepts in Principles of Design
Proportion Scale Balance: Symmetrical Asymmetrical Emphasis Rhythm : Repetition Gradation Transition Radiation

3 Proportion-Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a design.
Though the overhead lights dwarf the counter below, the overall out of proportion scale works as it draws the eye to the bar or counter. Hence more customers.

4 Scale refers to the size of an object in relation to either people it serves or what it is next to.
Over stuffed sofa does well with large coffee table. Look at the fireplace. How does it fit? The hall table fits well with the mirror above it.

5 Balance- Symmetrical One side mirrors the opposite side

6 Describe the balance used on the fireplace .
Asymmetrical Balance- not equal on each side. Look visually at whole room for balance and then the fireplace. What do you see? Describe the balance used on the fireplace .

7 Asymmetrical- More Examples

How was gradation used?

14 Rhythm Radiation-Lines radiate out from the center

15 What can you describe about the design principles used in this room?
