Metropolitan Areas Metropolitan Areas –U.S. is largely a nation of city dwellers –Over 250 metropolitan areas metropolitan areasmetropolitan areas –Location is one of main causes of population growth –Value of cities location is affected by changes in transportation, economic activities, and popular preferences.

Transportation affects settlement Transportation affects settlement –Early U.S. cities served as ports for trade b.t. U.S. and Europe on eastern coast…why?  B/C sailing ships were fastest at time –People moved inland  Began to ship crops/goods down rivers  Led to increase in river cities.  Erie Canal= helped bridge east coast to great lakes settlements. Erie Canal= Erie Canal= –Railroads/Cars  Mid 1800s saw transcontinental railroad expansion –Led to forming of major cities along RR.  1900s saw influx of automobiles. –Allowing more and more freedom to move places –Now live in suburbs of major cities.

Importance Importance –Metropolitan areas have increased greatly in population b/c of the introduction of the RR, and automobile especially. –These two inventions helped give people more freedom on where to live and work, increasing populations in suburbs of cities, thus increasing metropolitan areas
