3  March 9 – June 16, 1933  15 major acts passed by Congress to help with the economic crisis  Roosevelt used his “fireside chats” to encourage Americans and explain his New Deal programs.  Programs focused on immediate relief, recovery, and long term reform programs. (3 R’s)

4  SEC – Securities and Exchange Commission: regulate the stock market  FDIC – Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation: government insurance for bank deposits  NRA – National Recovery Administration: cooperation between labor and business (prices, wages, and hours)  Philadelphia Eagles  Declared unconstitutional

6  PWA – Public Works Administration: required federal contractors to hire African Americans  HOLC – Home Owners Loan Corporation: government purchased mortgages and restructured them into lower payments  AAA – Agricultural Adjustment Act: paid farmers not to farm much of their land

8  TVA – Tennessee Valley Authority: built dams to regulate the quality of and price of water  CCC – Civilian Conservation Corps: employed young men 18-25 on natural resource conservation projects.  Most popular of the New Deal programs

13  Roosevelt’s New Deal programs required spending federal money that the nation didn’t have. This was called deficit spending. He believed that the nation needed to spend money (projects and jobs for citizens) in order to begin making money and get out of the Depression.

14  In 2-3 paragraphs, evaluate what you know about F.D.R.’s New Deal programs. What do you think was successful? What programs might have been a waste? What could have been done differently during this time? What do you think may have been some criticisms of the New Deal?
