3 Performance Task at end of unit Creating Meals to Improve One’s Health Based on YOUR family history of health conditions and your current health status and caloric needs, create a lunch and dinner based on the requirements of MyPlate. Include all 5 food groups in your meal. Grocery Shopping to Improve One’s Health Your family has sent you to the grocery store to gather food for the family. Unfortunately, many of your family members are suffering from diet-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. Find a healthier food choice for the items they sent you to go get. Performance task explained in more detail on Day 6 of Nutrition Unit

10 Read & Reflect Scholar: ✤ What do you already know about nutrition, healthy eating, and disease prevention? Collegiate: ✤ Why is it important to eat healthy today and as you age? Genius: ✤ It is predicted that your generation will be the first generation in history to have a life expectancy less than your parents. Why? What role does nutrition play? ✤ The leading cause of death in the United States is heart disease. The leading actual cause of death is poor diet and physical inactivity. What types of food are causing us to die an early death?

11 At the end of class….. 1. Determine whether the boxes of food are a whole grain or a refined grain. Write in complete sentences. 2. Write a short paragraph describing the difference between whole grain and refined grains. 3. Write down your typical day of food intake. Breakdown the food into their food group. Count how many times you wrote the word Dairy and write the total at the top of your paper. Repeat this process for Protein, Fruit, Vegetables, and Grains. Analyze your eating habits and draw a picture of “MyPlate” that represents what you have eaten. Use assignment rubric (use assignment rubric)

24 What others are saying about grains? ✤ Grains are high in carbohydrates. ✤ “Insulin’s main job is to lower blood sugar levels after you consume any form of sugar or carbohydrate (they’re converted to sugar anyway). When insulin has to deal with so much sugar that it doesn’t know what to do with it anymore, it stores it as fat. Also, when insulin is always high, inflammation begins and cells become resistant to insulin, so your pancreas has to produce even more of it.
