1 VII CONSORTIUM VIIC Update Walton Fehr Boulder, CO June 21, 2006

2 VII CONSORTIUM VIIC Overview  VII Consortium –Non-profit corporation open to all vehicle manufacturers –Incorporated November, 2004 –Cooperative Agreement between USDOT and VIIC is in place –6 Members: Ford, Nissan, BMW, Honda, DCX, VW –Design in-vehicle equipment & applications (non-safety)

3 VII CONSORTIUM Near-Term Activities  Contributing to a Proof of Concept Test –Cooperating with the USDOT and its contractors to develop end-to-end VII system requirements –Designing on-board equipment including DSRC radios, driver interfaces, and vehicle interfaces –Developing test applications that will run in vehicles and the network –Applications include those intended to improve safety and mobility, and facilitate commercial activities

4 VII CONSORTIUM Proof of Concept Test  Planned for 2006 and 2007 –Equipment, application, and test environment development has started and will continue through 2006 –Equipment will be installed in a variety of vehicles –Test activities will be deployed in a selected area of Southeast Michigan for use in 2007

5 VII CONSORTIUM Contributions to Weather Information  Elements operational in the Development Test Environment  Collection of Probe Data –SAE J2735 standard for collecting vehicle probe data –First priority given to information that will contribute to Traveler Information  Cooperating with MDOT in their information integration project –Accepting guidance on what vehicle probe data will be most beneficial to their project –Providing guidance on what integrated information will be most beneficial to VIIC applications

6 VII CONSORTIUM Public Service Point Service Delivery Node/ Network Access Point Probe Data Collection ESB OSGi Probe Data Collection ENS Broker OBE RSE Private Service Point Collects probe data snapshots Assembles snapshot bundles RSE Proxy Appl.

7 VII CONSORTIUM Public Service Point Service Delivery Node/ Network Access Point Probe Data Distribution ESB OSGi Probe Data Collection Information Fusion Navigation Application Traveler Information ENS Broker OBE RSE Private Service Point Subscribes to ENS Broker for probe data topics Fuses dynamic information from multiple sources Provides dynamic information to higher-level users RSE Proxy Appl.

8 VII CONSORTIUM Uses of Weather Information  Developing applications that will use weather information –Applications are being created to test the end-to-end system including the complete loop from collecting probe data to improving vehicle safety and mobility based on using information gathered from probe data –Applications under development will present Traveler Information and Signage to vehicle drivers, and provide dynamic route guidance –Both applications will incorporate all dynamic information including weather

9 VII CONSORTIUM Advisory Message Delivery Service In-Vehicle Display Application Example OSGi OBERSE Service Delivery Node/ Network Access Point Public Service Point Private Service Point Traveler Information In-Vehicle Signage Alert Message Display Application Receives Alert messages Sorts according to priority Presents according to driver workload Receives Alert messages Determines geographical distribution Sends to RSE’s with dispatch instructions Monitors map database Creates alert messages based on trigger criteria Sends to Advisory Message Dispatch service with instructions RSE Proxy Appl. ESB Enhanced Roadway Map Traffic, Situation Incident Fusion MDOTCLARUS Other Sources Contains basic roadway map database Overlays traffic, incident and situation information from MDOT and other sources

10 VII CONSORTIUM Gateway Navigation Application Example ESB OSGi OBERSE Service Delivery Node/ Network Access Point Public Service Point Private Service Point Navigation Application Navigation Display Application Enhanced Roadway Map Receives route plan as a series of maneuver cues Displays next maneuver based on vehicle position Informs off-board application of vehicle position Receives destination Generates route plan and deliverers to OBE Monitors vehicle position Updates route plan based on traffic, situation, incident information Contains basic roadway map database Overlays traffic, incident and situation information from MDOT and other sources RSE Proxy Appl. Traffic, Situation Incident Fusion MDOTCLARUS Other Sources

11 VII CONSORTIUM Development Test Environment VIIC Offices  Deployed by Booz Allen for the USDOT  Developed cooperatively with VIIC and MDOT/RCOC  Planning RSE locations to facilitate system test using trial applications  Are there any weather sensing stations in this area?

12 VII CONSORTIUM Development Test Environment – West Section Suggested RSE locations RSE showing radio range Tolling Alternate route

13 VII CONSORTIUM Development Test Environment – Center Section Suggested RSE locations RSE showing radio range Icy bridge Parking Tolling Traffic condition Alternate route

14 VII CONSORTIUM Development Test Environment – East Section Suggested RSE locations RSE showing radio range School zone Signal violation Traffic condition Icy road Alternate route VIIC

15 VII CONSORTIUM Weather Community Participation  Define experiments that could be executed in the Development Test Environment –Well-defined, closed environment –All operations will be planned –Real-world situation; controlled circumstances  Provide guidance –Selection of probe data message elements –Algorithms for extracting information from probe data
