4 What is the Olweus Bullyling Prevention Program?  The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) reduces bullying in elementary, middle, and junior high schools.  OBPP is not a curriculum, but a program that deals with bullying at the schoolwide, classroom, individual, and community levels.

Schoolwide  Teachers and staff will be trained to use the program to deal with bullying incidents.  A schoolwide committee will oversee the program.  Students will complete a questionnaire to give us information about the amount and type of bullying at our school.

6 about bullying  We will not bully others.  We will help others who are bullied.  We will include others who are left out.  If we know someone who is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

“Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself.” Olweus Definition of Bullying:

In the Classroom  The four anti-bullying rules will be taught in all classrooms.  Class meetings will be held where students talk about what bullying is. Students will learn why bullying should not happen. They will also learn to ask an adult for help if they see or experience bullying.  Teachers will use positive and negative consequences for following or not following the four anti-bullying rules.  Teachers will work to make the classroom a positive place for students.

For Individuals Who Bully or Are Bullied  Teachers and staff will be trained to deal with bullying situations and the students involved.  Students who bully will be given consequences as soon as possible.  Student who are bullied will be supported by the staff. They will be told what action will be taken to end the bullying.  Teachers and staff will meet with the parents of students who bully and students who are bullied.

What can I do if I think my child is being bullied?  Share your concerns with your child’s teacher  Talk with your child. Tell him or her that you are concerned.  Try to find out more about your child’s school life.

What can I do if my child is bullying others?  Make it clear that you take bullying seriously and bullying is not okay.  Develop clear rules in your family for your child’s behavior.  Spend a lot of time with your child and closely supervise and monitor their activities.  Build on your child’s talents by involving them in positive activities.  Share your concerns with your child’s teacher, principal, counselor, or other professional.

What if my child isn’t involved in the bullying?  Encourage your child to intervene when they see bullying occur.  Say “stop, that’s bullying”  Go and stand next to the person being bullied.  Tell an adult or staff member.

If you have questions about our school’s bullying prevention program, please contact you child’s primary classroom teacher, counselor, principal or school staff member. It is very important that we work with you to prevent bullying. Thank you for your interest and support.
