PATTERNS OF GROWTH

3 PATTERNS  PLANTS ARE PLACED INTO 3 GROUPS ACCORDING TO HOW LONG IT TAKES THEM TO PRODUCE FLOWERS  ANNUALS  BIENNIALS  PERENNIALS

ANNUALS  COMPLETE THEIR LIFE CYCLE IN ONE GROWING SEASON  THEY GROW, PRODUCE FLOWERS THEN DIE  EX. MARIGOLDS, PETUNIAS AND MOST GRAINS

BIENNIALS  Complete their life cycle in two growing seasons  1 st season-produce roots stems and leaves all dies except the roots  2 nd season- leaves and stems grow back and produce seeds and flowers, then it dies  Ex. Beets, carrots, celery

PERENNIALS  Come back to life every year  Leaves and stems die each year and are renewed each spring  Ex. Lilacs, rhododendron bushes, begonias

TROPISM  STIMULUS: something in a plants environment that causes a reaction  Plants will change the way it grows  TROPISM: growth of a plant towards or away from a stimulus

TROPISM  What causes the bending?  Uneven growth of cells along the outside of stem  The cells on the shadier side elongate faster than those on the lit side, and the plant bends toward the light

TROPISM  POSITIVE tropism: grows towards the stimulus  Ex. Plant bends towards the sun  NEGATIVE tropism: grows away from the stimulus  Ex. Roots grow away from the sun

2 TYPES OF TROPISM  PHOTOTROPISM: Growing towards or away from light  EX. An unturned plant will bend towards a window  GRAVITROPISM: growing with or against gravity  Roots: positive gravitropism…grow down  Stems: negative gravitropism…grow up
