New Academic Program Planning Process NEW

New Academic Program Planning Process Obtain the most current Microsoft Word version of Request for Authorization to Plan a New Program (Appendix A) and an assigned proposal tracking number (and updates on any additional requirements)

Appendix A includes: Does the proposed program constitute a substantive change as defined by SACS?

Appendix A includes: Describe the proposed new degree program. The description should include: –a brief description of the program and a statement of educational objectives –the relationship of the proposed new program to the institutional mission –the relationship of the proposed new program to existing programs at the institution and to the institution’s strategic plan –special features or conditions that make the institution a desirable, unique, or cost effective place to initiate such a degree program

Appendix A includes: Provide documentation of student demand and evidence of the proposed program’s responsiveness to the needs of the region, state, or nation. List all other public and private institutions of higher education in North Carolina currently operating programs similar to the proposed new degree program. Identify opportunities for collaboration with institutions offering related degrees and discuss what steps have been or will be taken to actively pursue those opportunities where appropriate and advantageous.

Appendix A includes: For doctoral programs only: Describe the research and scholarly infrastructure in place (including faculty) to support the proposed program. Describe the method of financing the proposed new program (including extramural research funding and other sources) and indicate the extent to which additional state funding may be required. State the number, amount, and source of proposed graduate student stipends and related tuition benefits that will be required to initiate the program.

New Academic Program Planning Process Prepare Request for Authorization to Plan a New Program (Appendix A) and 1-page concept paper (and executive summary) –7 guiding principles

New Academic Program Planning Process 1.Consistent with our mission and niche in the UNC-GA system. 2.Relates to areas identified through the strategic planning process or will establish novel areas of inquiry in which the campus can quickly achieve national prominence 3.Is broad, inter- or multi-disciplinary, and allows for multiple specializations to be created or eliminated as needed

New Academic Program Planning Process 4.Leverages existing programs and/or leads to elimination of smaller, narrower degrees 5.Builds on existing capacity as evidenced by a body of faculty active in the area of scholarship (shown by grants, publications, successful collaborations, etc.) 6.Values doctoral and master’s over baccalaureate programs (doctoral>master’s>baccalaureate)

New Academic Program Planning Process 7.Is economically sustainable; preference will be given for reassignment of existing resources (or long-term external funding, such as endowment) over those with short-term funding (e.g., grants of a finite duration) or those relying on enrollment increase funding. Note: Current UNC-GA guidelines require new program proposals to include a funding plan that does not rely on guaranteed enrollment increase funding for implementation.
