Unit 1: Section 1 Your textbook characterizes globalization as being social, economic or political. But to be more specific it can have social, economic or political impacts on individuals, communities and nations. Consider the example of outsourcing to India (page 11) we would never say “this is an example of economic globalization” - it has social and political impacts as well as the obvious economic ones.

Unit 1: Section 1 What are economic impacts?

Unit 1: Section 1 Social Impacts

Unit 1: Section 1 What are political impacts?

Unit 1: Section 1 using the following example, respond to the questions that follow Last year, a shoe company named Ekin opened up a factory in the country of Puerto Rico. Ekin makes a popular shoe style (many different models) that sell for approximately $85 a pair in Canada and the United States. The shoes require the raw materials from a tree named Hevea brasiliensis, which is native to the country of Puerto Rico. This plant is now on the “endangered list.” From this they are able to make a specific type of Latex (rubber) that can be used in their shoe as a flexible but strong source of support for the foot. This is what makes Ekin shoes so popular. Ekin factories begin to grow, and they soon become a source of 10% of the country’s employment. Lately Ekin has been in the news as it has become public knowledge that children as young as 7 are working in the shoe factories, and that wages are low within dangerous working conditions. Ekin has been forced to close 3 factories last year due to public opinion back at home. Based on the above reading, answer the following questions in full: 1) Provide a list of 3 things that represent Economic Globalization. (3) 2) What are two things about this scenario that works well for Canadian consumers? (2) 3) What are two things that Canadian consumers would likely NOT agree with? (2) ____/7
