Ekin makes a popular shoe style (many different models) that sell for approximately $85 a pair in Canada and the United States. The shoes require the raw materials from a tree named Hevea brasiliensis, which is native to the country of Puerto Rico. This plant is now on the “endangered list.” From this they are able to make a specific type of Latex (rubber) that can be used in their shoe as a flexible but strong source of support for the foot. This is what makes Ekin shoes so popular. Ekin factories begin to grow, and they soon become a source of 10% of the country’s employment. Lately Ekin has been in the news as it has become public knowledge that children as young as 7 are working in the shoe factories, and that wages are low within dangerous working conditions. Ekin has been forced to close 3 factories last year due to public opinion back at home.
