3 Born in London, son of a commercial artist and a barmaid notorious for the violence of his language; psychological issues (hatred, anger) Expelled from school when he was 16 Look back in Anger transformed British theatre Theatrical renewal was taking part elsewhere: Germany: Brecht; France: Sartre. British theatre was obsessed with its own stagnation.

Director: George Devin. Performed in 1956. The play was an enormous success Film version: 1958 The drama facilitated the acceptance of „kitchen sink realism”
