Student Perceptions of Hybrid Courses

Like about Hybrid Format Course 1 For a few weeks, can take things at your own pace Can cover more topics in less time Reflective journal Enjoy switching it up, nice to have class in a different way Can learn material by yourself (online) and then have panel or discussion to enhance the material (in f2f class) Can do tests online to free up time for class discussions Course 2 Can complete homework and tasks at home in our own time Can think about our responses before we answer Helps me formulate my thoughts in a more cohesive manner Flexibility with assignments Can look at schedule anytime Nice format for submitting work and getting feedback Like f2f time to get to KNOW my professor (with online course wouldn’t be able to do that)

Do NOT Like about Hybrid Format Course 1 Online weeks seemed to have more work than f2f Easy to forget assignments Confusing to have 3 locations (Moodle, Web Vista, and schedule) Had a really hard time with the journal Don’t like the demands of a lot of long writing assignments due every week Online assignments don’t help me learn anything Can’t think of anything I didn’t enjoy Course 2 Hard to keep up with postings – a list of all required postings and due dates would be helpful I like hybrid format, but when you have multiple other hybrid classes also, sometimes feels overwhelming Tough to keep up Keeping up with workload is difficult; sometimes hard to follow between what is done in class and requirements for online

Felt most ENGAGED in the Course Course 1 14 of 15 students: f2f part – Loved the in-class time – Enjoy our class discussions – F2f discussions – Circle discussions – Small group discussion in class – All the time! never know what to expect walking in to class – Etc. 1 student: – Most engaged responding to posts made by other students. Online journal is excellent source to jot down anything referring to the class at any time Course 2 8 of 9 students: f2f part – In class – In class discussion – Face-to-face – Really enjoy hearing what other people have to say – Sitting in a circle, actively listening to my peers – Every time I am in class!!! Also certain discussions in Moodle have been really engaging – Etc. 1 student: – Online discussions because they allow me to sit back and think about what others are saying and then thoughtfully respond. I often need more “processing time”

Felt most DISENGAGED in the Course Course 1 6 of 15 students: online – Online discussion – Online assignments if confusion about exactly what is supposed to be done – Online discussion where no “replies” to posts are required 8 students: f2f things – Group presentations – Videos/movies – Some speakers – Having to write 2-3 pg paper on topic we haven’t discussed Course 2 6 of 9 students: online – Online forums – Online assignments – Online forums because no immediate feedback on our discussions – Online readings we never discuss – Readings – I put them off until last minute 1 student – Large group discussions in class. I can’t process the information and respond to the topic before it has changed.

Favorite Activities in F2F Sessions Course 1 Circle discussions Speakers, interactive panels We get to ask questions Hear classmates’ stories Several listed specific learning activities, such as a film or a speaker they liked Course 2 Loved discussions Sharing stories Listening to professor’s personal stories Several listed specific learning activities, such as games, videos, hands-on activities

Favorite Activities Online Course 1 Liked tests online because I get immediate feedback Posting things and reading how others feel about issues Watching movie and applying what I’ve learned Can discuss topics and thoughts you wouldn’t feel comfortable talking about in front of the whole class Enjoy Moodle discussions Being able to choose when I work on assignments Course 2 Certain discussions in Moodle Having readings online Discussions in groups of 4 Responding to others’ posts Connecting to resources

Advice for Hybrid “newbies” Course 1 Keep up – easy to get behind Check online frequently so don’t forget or miss stuff Write everything down in your planner so don’t forget Do online work during the regular class meeting time Gives your schedule more flexibility Course 2 Check the website a lot! (virtually ALL of the responses said something similar to: always check Moodle, be organized & check Moodle) Out of sight, out of mind Do online things a.s.a.p. Stay up to date with online Don’t fall behind
