2  Natural Hazard: severe/extreme weather event that has the potential to cause harm  Natural Disaster: severe/extreme weather event that causes damage or death ** When the hazard and people meet, it becomes a disaster (same place, same time)**

3 4 areas in the US:  Northwest (Washington, Oregon)  Southwest (California)  Midwest (Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska)  Southeast (Florida)

4 SUBJECT TO: Earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, mudslides, volcanoes  Why? HUMAN: High population Urbanized (cities) PHYSICAL: Close to the ocean Tectonics plate push together (converge)

5 SUBJECT TO: EARTHQUAKE, TSUNAMIS, WILDFIRES, FLOOD, DROUGHT WHY? HUMAN:  High population  Urbanized (cities) PHYSICAL:  Tectonic plates coming together (converging)  Close to the coast  Rainy/wet climate (Mediterranean) USUALLY

6 SUBJECT TO: TORNADO, DROUGHT, FLOODING WHY? HUMAN:  Large amounts of people live in mobile homes PHYSICAL:  “Tornado Alley”  Climate: cold air collides with warm air and creates funnel cloud  Large rivers  Unpredictable amount of rainfall

7 SUBJECT TO: HURRICANES, FLOODING WHY? HUMAN:  High population  Urbanized (cities)  People live in mobile homes PHYSICAL:  Close to coast  Ocean currents/wind= storms and hurricanes
