3 Community Environment: Columbus Signature Academy New Tech High Campus is housed in a 60-year-old auto parts warehouse in a busy urban area The school is located to provide easy access for internship and community service opportunities Community Support is shown through financial contributions, internships, and service opportunities Community members participate in student presentation projects The school received the 2009 Columbus Chamber of Commerce’s Community Project of the Year Award Community Involvement

4 Learning Environment: Wireless technology throughout the facility provides immediate access for all students at all times to online project-based learning software and provides maximum flexibility for reconfiguration of learning spaces Open, collaborative learning “studios” reflect the 21st century work environment with minimal physical barriers,a contemporary color scheme, partial-height walls, exposed building structure and systems Various of learning space sizes accommodate a wide variety of learning modalities and can be easily reconfigured to accommodate future enhancements in the New Tech model The Columbus Signature Academy program is based upon a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) focus and has a flexible science lab that is shared among the studios Learning Studio

5 Physical Environment: The exterior was renovated through the addition of large windows and two new entries The interior of the building conveys the interior environment of a 21st century work place rather than the traditional 20th century school A play of old, exposed structural technology against the new, exposed information technology creates a vibrant, contemporary learning environment that instantly captures and inspires the imagination of the students Energy efficient mechanical, plumbing and electrical equipment and materials have been utilized to provide an entirely new HVAC system, lighting, kitchen, science lab and restrooms Adequate natural daylighting reduces the need for artificial lighting Visitor Entrance Lobby

6 Planning Process: The Planning Team included members of the BCSC administration, the principal, faculty members, BCSC facility and maintenance staff, and a representative from the community as well as the CSO Team The CSO Team visited other New Tech High Schools in California and met with the development team from the New Tech Foundation Regularly scheduled planning meetings were conducted to encourage collaboration among the planning team Computer-generated, three- dimensional images provided team members with a realistic view of the finished spaces Throughout the first year of occupancy, the Team has met and discussed “lessons learned” that will be applied to the planning process for the second phase Conceptual Plan Computer-generated three-dimensional image Photo of completed project
