The national football team qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup for the first time by beating Bahrain in Manama on 16 November 2005, making them the smallest country ever (in terms of population) to qualify.

On returning home, Hasely "Raj Paul" Crawford had both a jet and a stadium named after him. During his reign as the 100 meter Olympic champion, he also appeared on postage stamps and was awarded Trinidad and Tobago's highest honor, Trinity Cross, in 1978. In 2000, he was named the Trinidad & Tobago Athlete of the Millennium. He is a member of the Caribbean Hall of Fame, along with Ato Bolden and Arthur Wint, one of only three track and field athletes to be inducted.
