 Primary research is when you gather information directly from other people about their beliefs, behaviours, habits, plans, desires and so on.  Secondary research is when you collect information from the library or internet on a topic.

 The questionnaire  Written  Oral  Interviews  Unstructured  Semi-structured  Direct observation

 A mind map is a way to expand and develop ideas about a topic.  In the case of this assignment you will use a mind map to consider what aspects of the topic you may want to investigate.

 What topic is the researcher mind mapping for?  What were the first two ideas (or subtopics) that come after the main topic?  Which subtopic is most developed?

Click and watch What are four ways that people can use to develop a research topic: ________________________________________________________ Click and look

Click and watch the video and match the phrases to their meanings Video phraseMeaning brainstorm(a)think carefully about something, typically before making a decision factor(b)things which have an influence on other things consider(c )a narrowly defined statement of what is to be investigated impacting on(d)acting on something else contributors(e)using a systematic approach to develop your ideas research statement(f)something that directly effects something else

 A research question says what you want to learn from your research.  Put another way, it is the question your research wants to answer.  The research question can also include a number of sub-questions

Are most ADMC students effective learners? What is effective learning? How are ADMC students motivated? Do most ADMC students use strategies for effective learning? Which question above is the main research question? Which question(s) can be answered best using the library or internet? Which question(s) will likely involve primary research?

Which software application was used to make the mind map? What is the main topic the researcher is mapping? What are the subtopics the researcher is interested in?

Make a main research question from the previous mind map: _____________________________________________ Possible sub-questions:_____________________________________________ _____________________________________________

Decide on a topic for your research project. Possible topics for you to conduct research on include the following:  Health (in the UAE; student health)  Student success (achieving good grades; learning something)  Recreation and leisure  Career planning  Environmental awareness  Driving habits ▪ Safety ▪ Economy ▪ the environment

MindMupMindMup (only with Google Chrome) X mind Smart Draw

 Referring to your mind map, make a research question for your research project.  The research question should involve a main question and two or sub-questions.  One or more of the sub-questions will be answered through primary research (direct questioning or observation).  One sub-question will be answered through secondary research.  Ensure that the question and sub-questions are not overly long or complex and that they can be researched from within the college.
