11 The Placement Book – Step 1 Choosing the correct level for your students The CAMS Plus, STAMS Plus & Solve program is based on your student’s maths ability, not year level. The Placement Book evaluation tests each individual student’s maths ability and places them on the correct CAMS & STAMS Plus level. * Includes Answers to each level placement test.

13 Placing 1. Comprehensive Method: Begin with placement test A and have student complete every test up until their year level. 8-13 correct  correct level * This method is great for showing where the student got stuck with a particular concept. 2. Level-Based Method: Choose the test appropriate to the year level of the student and have them complete that test. 8-13 correct  Correct level (if online, can do one more to be sure) 14 or more correct  Take test for level above Less than 8 correct  Take test for level below *Once you have determined level – purchase student books.

14 CAMS Plus – Step 2 Complete CAMS Pretest. This will give you a starting point for how students understand each concept. After teaching four STAMS lessons, do Solve review, administer benchmark test then assign Solve practice lessons if necessary. On completion of all STAMS lessons, have students complete the CAMS Post Test to give you final data as to how your students have mastered the skills.

15 Student Books The CAMS Plus student book contains: Student Progress Chart 1 Pretest – split into 16 lessons (30–45 minutes per day over 5 days) 4 benchmarking tests (30–45 minutes each) 1 Post Test – split into 16 lessons (30–45 minutes per day over 5 days) 3 blank answer sheets (for Pretest, Benchmark and Post Tests) 3 Self-assessments (for Pretest, Benchmark and Post Tests)

16 Student Books Complete after entire pretest, after each benchmark and after entire post test. Begin with left column and shade in a box for each correct answer for that strategy. 16 Fundamental Skills  Note: The benchmark tests don’t identify which question relates to which strategy – go by question number.

17 Pretests The Pretest consists of 16 pages, one page for each STAMS lesson topic. Allow 30-45 minutes per day to complete 4 pages of the 16 lessons. Students must complete the entire pretest in a 5 day period or as quickly as possible. Record results on Student Progress Chart

18 Benchmarks Benchmarks are designed to give you a quick measurement of overall growth. There are 4 Benchmark tests. Each test has 16 questions, one for each lesson topic. On completion of 4 STAMS lessons, complete benchmark. Allow 30-45 minutes to administer each benchmark. Record results on Student Progress Chart

19 Post Tests The Post Test is structured the same as the pre-test: 16 pages, one for each lesson topic. Allow 30-45 minutes per day to complete 4 pages of the 16 lessons. Students must complete the entire Post Test in a 5 day period or as quickly as possible. Record results on Student Progress Chart

Option 2: Assign Solve practice as homework/extra practice during STAMS instruction Option 3: Use Solve independently and work through from front to back.

43 STAMS lessons support several approaches to differentiated instruction: 1. ESL / English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) students: For any students who struggle with the language of maths, preview maths vocabulary. Throughout the instruction, refer to EAL/D Support tips that alert you to potential language obstacles. Use the Vocabulary Activity to help students tie new maths terms to words they already understand. 2. For struggling students: Use the Hands-on Activity, Reteaching Activity and Real-World Connection to give students other ways to access the skill. Review concepts visually with IWB lessons. 3. For confident students: Provide students an opportunity to extend their understanding of the concepts in the lesson with the Challenge Activity. Differentiation

44 Implementation may vary depending on your school situation: If using as primary instruction across whole-school: –With multiple levels per class: Ability-based groups across year levels will be easiest to work with or Alternate maths blocks to allow for multiple groups within a single class –With single level per class: Place all students on same level and supplement instruction/remediation with lower level STAMS Plus instruction If using solely with struggling students: –Place then pretest students to create an instructional plan based on STAMS Plus lessons Implementation

46 Getting Started 1.Download or complete the Placement Book online. 2.Order the CAMS Plus, STAMS Plus and Solve books at appropriate levels. Note: Each level has a student book and teacher guide. 3.Complete 16 pretests from the CAMS Plus book to determine baseline data. 4.Begin STAMS Plus instruction. 5.After every 4 STAMS Plus lessons: Complete related Solve practice then administer a benchmark test or Complete related Solve Review, Take CAMS Plus benchmark test then provide targeted practice with Solve Practices. 6.If students are still struggling with a specific maths concept or skill, have them work on the Related STAMS Lesson shown on the first page of each lesson in each STAMS Plus Teacher Guide. 7.At the end of the year, administer the 16 Post Tests in the CAMS Plus book to gauge student mastery.
