3 Job Information. O Location : Kaohsiung City. O Job title : Secretary. O Job duties : Shipping arrangement. O Years of working : 5 years.

4 English Communication. O 1.Do you need to use English to commutate at work? How important is it for you to use English to communicate? O A: Yes! One of my main duties is contact with my agents all over the world, write e-mails or even on the phone. I can not do without English.

5 Commutate. O 2.With what media and on what occasion do you use English to commutate (phone, conference, email, or face-to face enquiry)? What are the purposes of the communication (books, greeting, answering enquiries, or introduction)? O A: Meeting with foreigners will be face to face discussion, quotation issues will via e-mails, and for the urgent issues will be on the phone. Depends on what kind of situation.

6 Communication Problems O 3.What language communication problems do you have? What strategies and resources do you use to solve the problems? O A: Not enough vocabulary. No strategy, just try to find the answers from internet, Yahoo or Google.

7 Problems. O 4.What cross-cultural communication problems do you have? What strategies and resources do you use to solve the problems? O A: the way we speak English is more direct, besides, we learned American English in Taiwan since we were in elementary school, when we talk with European, I felt not only pronunciation differences, also the vocabularies. We use different words to describe one thing. Ex. We learned from school book, always, often and seldom. But my British English told me that they do not use “seldom”, they use “ not often” instead of “seldom”.

8 Problem Solving. O 5.How do you think about the problem solving experience? How important is it for you? O A: Practice makes perfect. We always learn and grow by solving problems. It applies to everyone, I think.

9 Improve. O 6.How do you improve your language and cultural competence? O A: By talking with foreigners and learning from teachers.

10 Help. O 7.What help do you think the government, the society or the company should provide to help workers improve their English competence? O A: Giving allowance or more benefits to attract the staff to improve their English abilities.

11 Suggestion. O 8.What suggestion do you have for school English education? O A: Most Taiwanese are too shy to speak out or talk to foreigners, even in our mind, we know how to speak a “perfect” sentence in English with nice words and correct grammar. But who cares? as long as you can speak. I think the main purpose for learning different languages is to communicate, not for the exams.
