Inhumanity against others always causes … Pain (both physical and psychological) Suffering Uncertainty in faith or in God

This quote shows the Nazi’s cruelty against children In the quote, you can tell that the Nazi’s did not care whether or not the children were comftorable Although there was water all around them, the children were not allowed to “break the ranks” so they suffered from thirst

This quote is from the scene of Madame Schacter on the train The passengers of the train, Madame Schacter, and her son all suffered during this quote The passengers had to deal with Madame Schacter and her theories about the fires Madame Schacter was sat down, tied up, and was given a gag so that she would calm down Madame Schacter’s son witnessed all of this pain and suffering and also his mother being treated the way she was

This quote once again shows the Nazi’s ability to be cruel and have no remorse or regret what so ever When the Nazi’s split the women from the men, they split up thousands of families This part of the book is the last time Elie ever sees his mother and sisters and he couldn’t do anything about it Elie never knew where his mother and sisters went but the pain and anxiety about it must have driven him crazy

In this quote Elie states how he is and always will be scarred He says he will never forget the sights that made him question god and the sights that “murdered” his soul. Not only would the fear of being put into an oven cause suffering but the psychological damage that was done from looking into the crematories would cause suffering as well

From all the sights, sounds, and feelings Elie went through he was still struggling with his faith At this point he says he believes in god, but doubts God’s “absolute justice” Elie believes that God just sits around and watches all these horrible things going on Elie is then forced to reconsider “God” and all the studying he has put into his religion

Once again, The Nazi’s show inhumanity against not only Jews but children Not only did the little boy who suffered for over half an hour bear pain, but every person who was forced to watch bore pain from that grotesque scene

This part of the story is where Elie asks God not to allow Elie to abandon his father like Rabbi Eliabou’s son did Elie cannot even think about what life would be like without his father and he knows that, if Elie stays focused, they can both make it out alive Elie must have had tons of anxiety on whether or not he would betray his father

At this point of the story, a son kills his father for a piece of bread (that was meant for the son anyway) and then the son dies after all This event happened right after the event with the Rabbi and his son and Elie was still hoping nothing like that would ever happen to him

Elies whole reason he stood alive was to protect his father and keep him alive Once his father died, Elie had no reason to live Not only losing a his father, but going through concentration camps alone, with no one there to lean on for support had to be potentially deadly for Elie and it must have caused him an extreme amount of pain

Elie was literally inches away from death when he looked at himself in the mirror The look of himself as beaten and battered that he was scarred Elie and never left him The physical pain and suffering that his body went through that made Elie look the way he did must have been worse then any pain in the whole world
