2 About the course The Generic Information Skills is a compulsory part of the university curriculum programme UTT0010 Organization of Studies Objective: to learn to find and critically evaluate information resources Students receive 1 european credit point 1200 - 1500 students trained every year Good partnership with teaching faculty

Overview of the Generic Information Skills program General overview of the library Overview of library services –library card, opening hours, borrowing and renewing books, returns arrangements etc Library’s homepage www.lib.ttu.eewww.lib.ttu.ee –print and electronic information sources e-Librarye-Library –ask for help Duration: One lecture

4 2.The importance of IL Face-to-face training classes for groups How to find, evaluate and use information How to develop basic search strategy How to locate resources using the Estonian libraries e-catalogue ESTER and online databases –How to find books: by Title, by Author, by Topic –How to use Estonian Subject Thesaurus –How to find Journals –How to find Journal articles How to cite and create a reference list to avoid plagiarism How to use databases outside university’s computer network How to use the Open Shelves Guide Duration: Two contact hours in the library trainingroom (including a short library tour)

5 3.The Web-based training — individual solution of practical exercises Contains: Five exercises how to search effectively: –in the e-catalogue ESTER –in the Estonian Subject Thesaurus –in the Estonian articles database ISE –in the full text database EBSCOhost Web –A-to-Z search engine Practical stepwise search construction guides Test duration: approx. 1 hour

6 Conclusion Teaching IL should be a part of all disciplines IL is a survival skill in the Information Age IL enables students to become self-directed lifelong learners
