Biography 2015-12-22 1

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high2 o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of3 golden daffodils, Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous4 as the stars that shine And twinkle on the Milky Way, They stretched5 in never-ending line Along the margin6 of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly7 dance8. 2. on high: in the sky 3. A host of: A crowd of 4. Continuous: Extending without break 5. stretched: extending 6. the margin: the border or the edge 7. sprightly: happily 8. dance: The repetition of the word “dance” is employed to emphasize the vivid happy scene of the daffodils and it's long lasting in the poet's mind. 2015-12-22 2

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud The waves beside them danced; but they Outdid the sparkling waves in glee9: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed — and gazed — but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood10, They flash upon that inward eye11 Which is the bliss of solitude12; And then my heart with pleasure fills13, And dances with the daffodils. 9. Outdid the sparkling waves in glee: Danced more happily than the sparkling waves 10. In vacant or in pensive mood: In a mood in which the mind is devoid of any thought or in a meditative mood 11. inward eye: mind screen, soul 12. bliss of solitude: feeling of happiness when one stays alone 13. with pleasure fills: fills with pleasure 2015-12-22 3

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud This poem is taken from Wordsworth's Poems of Imagination. The first and the second stanzas of it create a vivid picture of a host of golden daffodils dancing happily in the breeze. The third stanza reveals the happiness brought to the poet's ailing soul by the dancing daffodils. The last stanza shows that the happiness brought by the daffodils lasts forever in the poet's memory. The whole poem is obviously a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings recollected in tranquility. It eulogizes the harmony between things in nature and the harmony between nature and man. The poem is written in iambic tetrameter and the rhyme scheme of each stanza is ababcc. 2015-12-22 5
