Sincerity Truth Joy Justice Freedom Excellence Internationality How to revise in Geography 1.Review Take the Personal Learning Checklists and identify your areas of weakness Identify key case studies that can be used in exam answers for each topic 2. Revise Start with the areas of weakness. Use a revision guide, your exercise books and textbooks BUT change the format in which the information is presented. Eg present tables as graphs, graphs as tables, text as mind maps, diagrams as text, and so on. 3. Test Complete past papers available from your teacher and the WJEC website

Sincerity Truth Joy Justice Freedom Excellence Internationality How to revise in History: Three Tough Truths 1.YOU, AND ONLY YOU, CAN DO IT Not your teachers, not your parents. Revising is like when adults give up smoking. You can get the patches, but at the end of the day it's YOU that's got to do it, and it involves decision, and will- power. 2. THERE IS A LOT TO REVISE There are no short cuts. There is no such thing as ‘instant revision’. History requires you to retain very nigh volumes of knowledge. Success in History is not about remembering facts, it is about understanding why things happened, and what their impact was. BUT, if you do not remember facts, you can’t show understanding. YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AND WHEN. Do not try to dodge this; you can’t. If you are not ‘good at History’, you will need to spend longer on it... or fail. 3. REVISING IS REMEMBERING It's not 'revising' unless you're fixing it into your brain. If you spend five hours working in your room, but you still can't remember it in the exam, you've spent 5 hours working, but you've not done any revision. NEVER just read your notes. You must always be DOING something to FIX the information in your brain.

Sincerity Truth Joy Justice Freedom Excellence Internationality 5 Steps to Success in History 1.Comprehensive notes. 2. Know what happened and when. 3.Learn the causes and consequences of events. 4.Fix the information so it becomes second nature. 5.Apply your knowledge.

Sincerity Truth Joy Justice Freedom Excellence Internationality Step 1: Have comprehensive notes: if you do no have them, GET THEM You will have much of these from your classwork and homework. You can attend revision sessions to fill any gaps. Remember, that is what revision sessions are for; they are not enough on their own.

Sincerity Truth Joy Justice Freedom Excellence Internationality Step 2: Know and remember what happened and when. Produce a timeline for each topic: 1.Britain 1900-1926 2.The Cold War 1943-1991 3.Germany 1919-1941 The timeline should feature all of the important events and trends of that period. Stick them on your bedroom wall. Refer to them, when completing Step 3.

Sincerity Truth Joy Justice Freedom Excellence Internationality Step 3: Learn the causes and consequences of events. This is where your teacher comes in. I have boiled down the entire Germany topic, and the entire Cold War topic, to six key essay questions. Complete these essays, on time. It will only become stressful if you miss deadlines and the work mounts up. This will take hard work and will power. I will provide essay plans and a revision session before each deadline: but you will spend at least four hours on each essay (longer if you failed to attend the revision session).

Sincerity Truth Joy Justice Freedom Excellence Internationality Step 4: Fix the information, so it becomes second nature. Reduce each essay down to a different format. It could be a mind map, a cartoon strip, a single page of notes; whatever works best for you.

Sincerity Truth Joy Justice Freedom Excellence Internationality Step 5: Apply your knowledge. Practice papers. Remember, this is the final step. If you go straight to this step, you will not remember anything.
