A LL T EENAGERS SHOULD HAVE A P ART - TIME J OB TO L EARN W HERE M ONEY C OMES F ROM, AND TO L EARN HOW TO S PEND M ONEY By Kevin Hu

W HAT IS THE P URPOSE ? The first 18 years of a youth's life is a free-to-play game, as they are supported by their parents and the rest of their life starts becoming a pay-to-win(have to worry about financial issues). The purpose of having all teens required to have a part time job and a debit card allows them to be fully prepared for the future and the tough financial situations. In addition to finding a part time job and earning real hard cash, the parents will take away a portion of their money as if they are paying for their rent, food, clothes, and taxes.

W HAT WILL THIS CHANGE ? This will help let the teen realize the importance of money saving and fighting for a high class job. The amount you earn that does not go towards rent, bills, and taxes is an extremely small amount. These part-time jobs will set a great foundation when they have graduated high school and are attending post- secondary universities. When applying for summer jobs, they can use the past experiences they built in their resume. By the time the teen is in university, they will no longer be living with his/her parents. They will be using the savings they’ve made when they were a youth and from the job they are currently working at for their rent.

W HY WOULD TEENS WANT TO WORK AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE ? Every teen wants to be successful, receive a great education, and get a high-paying job. However, when they have never started taking the steps, they do not think it is hard to do these things and believe they do not need to start at a young age. Many teens might believe minimum wage of approximately $10 an hour, working part time for 15-20 hours a week will earn them $150-$250 a week is a lot of money. This is true, with the support from your parents. With a part time job through their youth, they are able to make approximately $7300 a year. This may seem like a lot of money, but when they realize the amount of work it takes to buy a house, it almost seems impossible. It would take approximately 137 years to buy a million dollar house when working part time and 59 years to buy a million dollar house when working full time. This does not include the fees they need to pay along the way such as shelter, food, and clothing.

W HAT WILL THEY LEARN ? Because it takes 59 years to make enough money to buy a house on minimum wage, they will learn the many financial lessons along the way. This includes such as buying the house at 15 years time, loaning the bank’s money. Then you spend the next 50 or so years repaying the bank with interest. Although you are paying a lot more, this allows you live in a home as soon as possible. Youth today need to learn the importance of money saving but not through reading it online or hearing it from a parent. They need to experience the toughness first-hand, because it will be the only thing that will inform them that money saving in the future is a crucial aspect to living a luxurious life.

S UMMARY When a youth is forced to work a part-time job, they will learn along the way that the money they make is truly very little once you put shelter, food, and clothing as limiting factors. Once they realize the toughness in the first year, they will be motivated to keep finding part-time jobs through high school and university. The money they save will help them greatly in the future, and give them a big boost in finding good housing, food and clothing once they have graduated university.
