Psychology’s Statistics Psychology’s Statistics Appendix (page A1 - A13)

Statistics  purpose: make data more meaningful  provide a method of organizing information so that it can be understood

Frequency Distribution  list of scores placed in order from highest to lowest

Three Main Types of Statistics  Descriptive Statistics  Comparative Statistics  Inferential Statistics

Descriptive Statistics

 used to describe the basic features of the data in a study  2 Main Types:  Measures of Central Tendency  Measures of Variation

Measures of Central Tendency  statistical methods for finding the center of a distribution  three methods:  Mode - most frequently occurring score  Mean - average of a distribution  Median - middle score in a ranked distribution

Measures of Variation  variation – how spread-out scores are  Example: range - difference between the highest and the lowest scores in a distribution

Inferential Statistics Inferential Statistics

Inferential Statistics  can be used to make a decision or reach a conclusion about data  correlations:

Statistical Significance  statement of how likely it is that a result occurred by chance  For something to be statistically significant, the possibility that the difference between groups would occur by chance alone is not more than ____ % 5

END CLASS NOTES

Favorite Subject Survey (& Statistics)  Working with your group, create a 5 question survey to determine views on the subjects taught at North Cobb High School.  Answers to your survey questions should be a range from 0 – 5 with 0 representing HATE the subject and 5 representing LOVE the subject.  Administer the survey to 3 students in the class

Favorite Subject Survey (& Statistics) Now analyze your data:  Make a frequency distribution for each of the five subjects.  Compute the mean, median, & mode for each of the five subjects.  Compute the range for each subject.
