 Social Networking: - The way the 21 st century communicates! -The grouping of individuals into specific groups made for people to gather and share first hand information and experiences. -There are social sites that are websites people can join from all over the world. -Dangers include data theft, viruses and online predators.

When communicating online there are some basic rules that must be followed. -Do not type in all caps. -Do not leave the subject field blank. -Refrain from formatting emails with color text, background colors, or images. -Never expose your contact’s addresses to strangers. -If you receive a nasty email, do not respond immediately or at all. -All private email is copyrighted by the author. -Compress large files before sending.

“Willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones and other electronic devices” Cyber bullying CBS Cyber bullying ABC Megan Meier

-Personally identifiable student information is protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) -Student info can be released in only 2 circumstances: 1.If it is information that has been designated “directory information” – anything that could not be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy 2. With parent’s written consent – written and specific

-Teachers should encourage the use of social networking sites but explain the dangers of online predators and viruses -Teachers should explain the issue of cyber bullying and thoroughly explain the negative effects it can have on students -Teachers should explain and model proper netiquette for efficient communication over the internet -Teachers must keep in mind student data polices and have respect for student privacy

 “The gap between those individuals and communities that have, and do not have, access to the information technologies that are transforming our lives” (Dickard).

- Teachers must be advocates of technology in the classroom -Teachers must consider all aspects of diversity -Teachers should include unbiased forms of media and presentations in classroom activities -Teachers should bring technology to all students Teacher bias means that different students are gaining different information from different teachers

Teachers with a high number of students on free and reduced lunch use technology for skills and drills practice while the same teachers with students from a higher socioeconomic class use technology to engage students in creative and critical thinking activities. Teachers give boys more research/computer based projects. Examples of teacher bias

-Teachers should encourage women, people of color, people with disabilities, people for whom English is not a first language, and people from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds to value technology related fields as accessible and attractive educational and career options. -Teachers should provide multiple opportunities in the classroom for students to have access to technology so that they may freely explore resources that they could not at home. -Teachers need to control their personal bias against students -Teachers should provide more opportunities for these students, not less. Every student can succeed given the correct and unbiased guidance of a mentor.

Measuring Fair Use: Four Factors 1. The purpose and character of your use Has the material been transformed by adding new meaning? Was value added by creating new insights and understandings? 2.The nature of the copyrighted work Stronger case if material is copied from a published work rather than an unpublished work 3.The amount and substantiality of portion taken The less you take the more likely to be excused as fair use 4.The effect of the use upon the potential market Does it deprive the owner of income?

Attribution Attribution Share Alike Attribution No Derivatives Attribution Non-Commercial Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives

-Teachers should familiarize themselves and their students on copyright laws and the consequences of infringement -Teachers should teach their students how to properly cite copyrighted material -Teachers should teach their students about Fair Use and how to work Fair Use in their favor.

 Using computers and the internet within the classroom can be very effective. Proper use must be taught to the students and all students must have equal opportunities to use the technology. Teachers need to overcome their natural bias towards certain groups in order to ensure every student is receiving the education they deserve. How has technology shaped student learning?
