Overview – Business of Construction The Business of Construction Program is designed to expose University students to a wide range of business issues that involve the construction community through an integrated approach of seminars and guest speakers coupled with hands on experiences and internships.

The goal of the program is to promote the interaction of the University with the Private Sector under a Public/Private partnership primarily for the benefit of the students, but with a byproduct of valuable contributions to private industry. The Business of Construction Program is designed to expose the students at California State University to a wide range of business issues that involve the construction community through an integrated approach of seminars and guest speakers coupled with hands on experiences and internships. While the most of the speakers and seminar topics will deal with traditional subjects, the predominate theme of the Business of Construction program is technology, the impact it has having on the way business is conducted, and what skills will be vital for companies to possess to be successful. While the most of the speakers and seminar topics will deal with traditional subjects, the predominate theme of the Business of Construction program is technology, the impact it has having on the way business is conducted, and what skills will be vital for companies to possess to be successful. Ethics in Construction Technology is in our future, but perhaps more than any other industry construction will change from an community that relies on personal relationships to one that becomes detached as internet applications reduce, if not eliminate, human contact on any number of fronts. Guest Speaker Series The guest speaker series will be 1-2 hour presentations on campus and each will address the following general outline: Overview of specific industry and its role in construction Typical duties and functions Impact of technology on industry Challenges the industry faces and what skills will be needed. Ethical challenges and how they are being met. What employers look for in hiring new employees

Topics will be of interest to active professionals and will may be held off campus, or over the web, to attract a wider audience, as well as be a fund raising opportunity for the University. In cooperation with North Coast Surety Connection and North Coast Surety Technologies the students will develop a series of applications that replicate the current paper based systems used by the surety industry to internet based systems. A University has an option to use the application as a fund raiser for the University through subscriptions and advertising. Every student that has desires to run their own company some day will need to know every aspect of the business, and this program will provide the best insight there is. Construction Management Class Project Assignment Each Construction Management could be encouraged to sell one subscription to Bid List Connection. One is not hard at all, but will require a general sense of how the industry manages the bid activity, what applications does, as well as the selling points. MIS students that successfully develop “The Chico Process” application between the State agency and an insurance company will be very challenged as they tackle the task of exchanging bid data with all its variations and multiple parties. The theory is simple, the reality is not. Should they even get close the learning experience, and the contacts they make, will make the difference in their education and their career options.

An original set of advertisers will be provided space in exchange for their participation, but that space will be subject to 90 day time limits. After 90 days if there is an offer for paid advertising, the space goes to the highest bidder. From making sure the students know about upcoming speakers and seminars, to making sure there are properly outfitted rooms with speakers that are coordinated and treated professionally.
