7 AS History Matters www.pastmatters.org AS History Matters www.pastmatters.org Why was France less successful than Britain in the 18 th C? France It cost a lot of money to borrow money. Neither the nobles nor the clergy (together the richest people in the country) paid many taxes France had a series of harvest failures and bad weather. This meant there were times when there was very little food for ordinary people. The French people and Louis XVI thought that the king should be respected and admired in the world. This meant following something called ‘gloire’ The French king had to spend money on his appearance to keep up the image of the monarchy The French Government and people were not as concerned about trade. Most of the leaders of the army were nobles. This meant some were talented and others were not. In France's case more were not. The Feudal System still existed in France. France had vulnerable borders. Britain It was cheap to borrow money. Everyone paid taxes. British nobles thought it was their duty to pay more than poorer people. Britain did not suffer from bad harvest failures. This meant there was always food. Britain did not want the king to waste money on his appearance. They thought it was unnecessary. Parliament and the government did everything they could to improve trade. They, and lots of people though this was key to making Britain great. Most of the leaders of the army were nobles. This meant some were talented and some were not. One, John Churchill Duke of Marlborough was the best general around. The Feudal system did not exist in Britain. Britain had a very strong Navy. Britain was surrounded by the sea. She was not particularly worried about other countries threatening her borders.
