Associating With a Local Congregation 1 Cor. 1:1-3

The Pattern  The church exists universally – Matt. 16:18, 1 Tim. 3:14-16  And within that small local groups are formed – Acts 9:26-28  This is separate from becoming a member of the church – Col. 2:11-12  Reasoning for one’s choice may differ  But it must be in harmony with God’s word, and we must follow this pattern!

The Work  Often listed out as “evangelism, edification, & benevolence to the saints”  How would these works differ without the congregation? – 2 Tim. 2:14-19  What about benevolence? – 1 Cor. 16:1-3  Is it possible to edify or be edified without the presence of brethren?  Do not think that the work ends there!

The Worship  As individuals, we can worship God whenever we see fit with song, prayer and study of His word  But according to the Scriptures, some aspects are limited to assembly – Acts 20:7, 2:42; Eph. 5:19-20  It would be impossible to have this kind of fellowship with the church universal  Thus the necessity of the local church is proven

Conclusion What a wonderful thing to be an active part of a local work! And how good it is to visit other congregations and see their growth and workmanship! When the church functions as Christ envisioned, it is an amazing thing. But that depends greatly upon us and the effort we are willing to put forth.
