1. A Limited War Soldiers could only wage a limited war because politicians feared expanding the war might draw China into the conflict.

2. Inexperienced Soldiers
The average age of U.S. soldiers in Vietnam was 19 and most served a one 1-year tour making them very inexperienced. Their short tours meant by the time a soldiers gained some combat experience their tour was over.

3. No Front Line Unlike World War I and World War II, Vietnam had no front lines. The enemy was everywhere. The Viet Cong mixed with the local population. It was nearly impossible to tell friend from foe.

4. Guerilla Tactics The Vietnamese employed guerilla tactics launching surprise attacks, emerging from hidden tunnels and then disappearing back into their underground strongholds. The Vietnamese army was quick and effective at this style of warfare.

5. Booby Traps The Vietnamese riddled the countryside and jungle with hidden death traps for American soldiers. Bamboo stakes lay at the bottom of covered pits. Landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) inflicted gruesome wounds on U.S. soldiers

6. Land and Climate The land and climate in Vietnam made it particularly difficult for U.S. soldiers to effectively fight. Temperatures were regularly above 100 degrees and the rain was almost constant. Animals, reptiles and insects were also a regular annoyance.

7. A Dedicated Enemy The Vietcong and North Vietnamese were fighting for the homeland and were determined to win.
