4 Excerpt This book records in drawings the author’s journey through northern Europe and his impressions of the land, the people at work and play, and their art, architecture, folklore, and fairy tales. Other books by Anno may be substituted here with only a few changes in the ladder questions. Obtain the book from a school library to read the story in its entirety and complete the ladder activities.

8 Discussion Strategies: Think-Pair-Share, Write-around, Sequencing pictures, Role Play, Journaling Choose 3 of 4 questions below to complete. A1 : Look throughout the book. Create phrases to accompany the first three pictures. A2: What is the effect of Anno’s riding closer into town? Generate a list of everything you see in the succeeding pictures. B1: Can you elaborate on the scene in the fifth picture from the end of the book. How many scenes are included? What are the different scenes portraying? D1: How would you describe the changes in scenes that Anno experiences in the book?

B3: What conclusions can you draw about village life from viewing the series of scenes in the fifth picture from the back of the book? Identify at least three.

12 Choose one of the ideas to complete. Be creative. 1. Pretend to be a news reporter that is traveling on the journey with Anno. Keep a journal or diary of the most important places visited. Prepare a brief news article for your paper. 2. Plan a map of your school. Include your classroom, the library, the office, and the gym. Generate directions for a visitor coming into the school and wanting to get to the four places on your map.
